THOMSON, Ga. - Eugene M. Tanner, age 90, of Thomson, passed away Saturday, January 3, 2015, at University Hospital. He was born May 27, 1924, in Dublin, GA, to the late James Clayton and Mary Coleman Tanner. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary B. (Loveland) Tanner. Gene served as a Frogman in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He was assigned to the Underwater Demolition Team (UDT) 5 and served in the Western Pacific Theatre, primarily in the Philippine Islands. Following the war, he owned several small businesses and was an independent truck driver. He was a life member of the VFW #649 Augusta. He is survived by his children, Myrna (David) Moore of Thomson, GA, Roy Tanner of Evans, GA, Karen Rhodes of Martinez, GA, and Jon (Dianna) Tanner of Augusta, GA; 5 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by 3 sisters and 7 brothers. Family will receive friends Tuesday (today) from 6 pm to 8 pm at The Poteet Funeral Home, 3465 Peach Orchard Rd., Hwy. 25, Augusta, 30906, 706.798.8886.
