SPARTA, Ga. - Helen Burgamy Johnson, age 94, of Sparta, GA, died on September 19, 2016. Helen was born in Hancock County to the late Ulas Evans Burgamy and Clarice Jackson Burgamy. She was the devoted wife of the late Melvin Ellis Johnson. Mrs. Johnson graduated from Sparta High School in 1940, Macon Hospital School of Nursing in 1943, after which she attended Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn., and trained in Fulton County for a Public Health Nurse. She worked in Wilkes County before joining the Army Nurse Corp and was stationed at Camp Wheeler in Macon and at Fort McPherson in Atlanta. She married January 16, 1946 and worked at Hancock County Health Department, where she retired in August of 1978. She served as Chairman of the Hancock County Board of Health for a number of years. Mrs. Johnson was a member of Pierce Memorial United Methodist Church and joined the Fionne R. Miller Sunday School Class in 1946 and she had also been a member of the United Methodist Women since 1946. She was preceded in death by two brothers, James Arthur and Ulas Evans Burgamy, Jr., and three sisters, Madeline B. Johnson, Venice B. Eubanks and Florence B. Humphrey. Mrs. Johnson is survived by a daughter, Jo (Chris) Epps of Sparta; a granddaughter, Amy (Joe), and a great- granddaughter, Aiyana of Gray; a sister, Virginia B. English of Augusta; a special nephew, Jimmy Johnson of Sparta, and other nieces and nephews and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, September 23, at Pierce Memorial United Methodist Church in Sparta with Rev. Darrell McGinnis officiating. Interment will be in Sparta Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. at the church. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to Pierce Memorial United Methodist Church.
