AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mr. Herman Floyd Fort was born in Washington County, Davisboro, Georgia on March 5, 1933 to parents the late Idella Tillman Fort and the late Thomas Fort. He had three siblings he loved dearly who all preceded him in death. His family moved to Sandersville, Georgia and after graduating from TJ Elder High School in 1953, Floyd voluntarily enlisted in the Marine Corp. He was honorably discharged at rank of private on March 31, 1954. Upon discharge Floyd moved to New York City first to the Bronx and later to New York City. He met and married Ms. Johnetta Miner in 1964. Their marriage produced 2 daughters before their divorce. He continued his education at Collegiate Business Institute in New York where he received a Diploma in Junior Accounting in 1961 and at Fordham University where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1979. He spent over 25 years working for the Internal Revenue Service and after retirement he returned to Georgia to become caregiver to his mother Mrs. Idella Maxwell in Augusta, Georgia until her passing in 2006. He was active in local organizations such as the NAACP. He became a member of Beulah Grove Baptist Church where he attended Sunday services. Floyd enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He returned to Sandersville "Happy Town" often to visit and attend high school and family reunions. He departed this life on Friday afternoon March 4, 2016 and leaves to mourn his passing his daughters, Marjorie Lynn Fort-Dees of New York, NY and Lydia Fort of San Diego, CA. and his only grandchild Mahalia Dees of New Orleans, LA. He also leaves a son-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, March 12, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. from Beulah Grove Memorial Chapel, 1434 Poplar Street, Augusta, with Dr. Sam Davis, pastor, officiating.
