APPLING, Ga. - H.L. "Papa" Garrard, 86, of Appling, Ga., entered into rest on Monday, Oct. 12, 2015. He is survived by his wife of 60 wonderful years, Ruby Helton Garrard, daughter of the late Larkin and Mahala Ann Rodgers Helton. Mr. Garrard is also survived by his six children, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. Mr. Garrard was generous with his children and grandchildren; he loved to share his life's experience with both his family and friends. Life was a wonderful experience for H.L. and he lived every minute to its fullest. H. L. Garrard was the eldest of 15 children, born in the year of 1929 to the late Harvey and Earline Lindley Garrard. H.L., the son of a sharecropper grew up picking cotton and the other crops. At a young age, H.L. became friends with a U.S. Army recruiter and that set things up for him to join the U.S. Army at the age of 16. H.L. served in three wars, World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam, plus he was a part of the Occupation of Japan. H.L. was awarded numerous medals and citations of which include the Bronze Star, WWII Victory Medal, Occupation of Japan Medal, Army Commendations with Silver Oak Leaf Cluster, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with Bronze Star, and the Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Stars. In the year 2003, he was awarded the medal FREEDOM IS NOT FREE by Major General (Retired) Chui Seung Woo, ROC Army. H.L. began his military career as a combat engineer and ended it after serving many years as Military Police Officer retiring on January 31st, 1974. He was the owner and operator of Garrard Property, the National Genealogy Society, the Retired Military Police Association and New Life Church of God. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, October 17, 2015, at New Life Church of God with the Rev. Wallace Banks officiating. Interment will be in Bellevue Memorial Gardens with full Military Honors. Pallbearers will be U.S. Army Honor Guard.
