JACKSON, S.C. - Graveside services for Mr. Irby Taylor Grant, 86, Jackson, SC, who entered into rest June 14, 2016, will be conducted Saturday morning at 11 o'clock in Jackson Memorial Park. Dr. Mark Riser officiating. Mr. Grant was a native of Chester, SC, having made Jackson his home for the past 65 years. He was a former member of the First Christian Church and a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War, obtaining the rank of sergeant. Mr. Grant spent most of his professional life in construction, being employed at one time by Daniel Construction, having retired as a heavy equipment supervisor with E. I. DuPont Company at the Savannah River Plant. Mr. Grant was an avid outdoor sportsman who loved hunting and fishing. He spent countless hours on the Savannah River in the Silver Bluff area and on Clark's Hill looking for that always-elusive lunker bass, but he wouldn't pass up a mess of redbreasts and shell cracker. When he retired from the Savannah River Site, he and Evelyn left the working world to spend a great deal of time traveling the United States and making friends wherever they went. In their retirement, Irby and Evelyn also took up the tandem bike. At any given time they could be seen patrolling the streets of Jackson, both in perfect synchronization - a metaphor for their 63 years together. As a retiree he also developed an interest in multiple kite flying and received coverage in several local media outlets. Irby was the youngest of 10 children and was the last survivor of what he liked to call the "Famous Grant Boys." His family will miss his joyous spirit and zest for life. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Muns Grant; a sister, Pauline G. Thompson, of Woodruff, SC; and a host of other loving family members and friends, which includes nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews, and great-grandnieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the graveside following the service. The family would like to thank caregivers Mary, Bertha, Martha, Beverly, Pat and Deborah for their countless hours caring for both Irby and Evelyn and loving them as their own family.
