James Lee Blevins entered into rest on Saturday, January 7, 2017, at the Golden Living Center-Windermere in Augusta following a stroke and subsequent illness. He was born to the late James Blevins and Louise Mitchell Blevins in Selma, Alabama, on October 22, 1952. Nick-named "Choo-Choo", he pushed past the boundaries of Selma and joined the Army where he would go on to live both domestically and abroad. Mr. Blevins met his wife, Cheryl Ann Gilliard, while they were both serving in the Army. After a colorful courtship, they married in Charleston, SC, surrounded by friends and family.

During his years in the military, Mr. Blevins became a Staff Sergeant as well as a racquetball champion and an avid bicycler. He was often seen bicycling through German fields with one or more of his children at his side. Upon his return to the United States, he retired in Augusta, GA, from the Army. He went on to continue his career as a medical technologist; working first at Eisenhower Army Medical Center and later at Shepeard Community Blood Center.

Mr. Blevins had a passion for learning, gardening, cooking, and family. He returned to school following his retirement from the military and earned a Bachelor Degree through the University of Phoenix. Through the years, he was known to grow any plant he was able to get ahold of inside or outside of his home. He cooked the best biscuits on this side of heaven! And of course, he took any opportunity to be present for his family and also for his church members at First Metropolitan Baptist, where he sang in the choir and observed the baptism of his granddaughter, Jahnaya.

With his death, Mr. Blevins leaves behind his wife of 40+ years, Cheryl Ann Blevins; his daughter, Jacyntha Chantell Grant, and her husband, Steven; his son, James Donovan Blevins, and his companion, Andreya; his sister, Barbara Jean Page, and her husband, Reginald; his sister, Mary L. Smith, and her husband, Donald; his brother, James Blevins Jr, and his wife, Shirley; his brother, Jerry Blevins; his brother, Alfred Blevins, and his wife, Hawa; his brother/son, Leslie Blevins, and his companion, Christine; his brother/son, David Blevins, and his wife, Anita; one aunt, Viola Mitchell; 17 grandchildren, and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted Monday, January 16, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at First Metropolitan Baptist Church, 3719 Belair Road, Augusta, Reverend Enoch Ward, pastor. The remains will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. The interment will be Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, Columbia, SC.
