EVANS, Ga. - Janet Delores Newman, age 83, passed away on May 20, 2016. She passed away at her home in Evans, Ga. Jan was born on 1/15/1933 in Cleveland, Ohio to Maurice and Edna Axelrod. She spent some of her teenage years in Toledo, but was proud to call Cleveland her home for many years. After high school, Jan went on to The Ohio State University where she majored in Dental Hygiene. While pursuing her degree she met and married Allan M. Newman (deceased). A few years after they married, they started a family consisting of Barry (wife, Tammy), Steven, Neil and Pamela Newman Weinberger. In 1973 Jan was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Some people may allow that to change their lives negatively, but Jan was not one of those people. She took the challenges that MS threw at her her and made it her cause. She would drive fellow patients all around Cleveland, she became a tireless advocate. If you would let her, she would give you the shirt off of her back. She effortlessly worked at the Children's Museum and with the Cleveland School system, teaching young people the importance of good dental hygiene. She helped as many people, including strangers, as much as she could. Janet was awarded the United True Sisters Child Care award for her volunteer efforts. She eventually moved to Evans, Ga., to be close to her daughter. There she resided with Vernell Dukes, who became her lifelong friend and caregiver. Along with her four children, Jan is survived by her grandchildren, Saul and Hannah Weinberger, Danielle, Alexander, Gabrielle, Brooklyn and Jordyn Newman and great-grandchild, Josiah. Service will be graveside at Hillcrest Cemetery, Bedford Heights, Ohio, on Monday, May 23, 2016 at 11:00am. The family requests donations in lieu of flowers to the MS Society, 6155 Rockside Road, Suite 202, Independence, OH 44131 or Chabad of Augusta, 3924 Old Furys Ferry Road, Augusta, GA 30907.
