BOLTON, ONTARIO, CANADA and EDISTO BEACH, S.C. - John Peter van Haastrecht, Jr., 71, husband of Elizabeth Beth Bryan van Haastrecht, of Bolton Ontario Canada and Edisto Beach, SC, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, January 8, 2015 at Hospice of Charleston. Funeral Services will be held 3:00 PM, Sunday, January 11, 2015 at Bryant Funeral Home Chapel, 607 North Parler Avenue, St. George with the Reverend Al Zadig officiating. Visitation will be from 2:00-3:00 PM before the service. John was born on June 14, 1943, in the Netherlands, a son of the late Elisabeth and John Peter van Haastrecht, Sr. He graduated from the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario with a Civil Engineering degree and served as a pilot in the Royal Canadian Navy. Upon retiring from the military, he entered into real estate development where he excelled with A.E. LePage, Campeau Corporation and his own company, Devan Properties Limited and Vanreal. He served recently on numerous boards such as the Royal Military College Foundation. John was a man who worked hard, loved his family, loved to travel with his grandchildren and wife. He was always up to accepting a challenge whether it was riding bikes or climbing Mt. Shasta to raise money for his college. He enjoyed a good glass of wine and conversation and was always open minded to all points of view. He was extremely giving and very supportive of his community. Surviving is his loving wife of 46 years, Elizabeth Beth van Haastrecht, Bolton Ontario Canada and Edisto Beach, SC; a son, John (Katrina) van Haastrecht III, North Augusta, SC; a daughter, Trina (Kent) Turberville, James Island, SC ; grandchildren, Taylor, Bailey, Chance, Madison van Haastrecht, Bryce and Lucius Turberville; a sister, Betty Aldridge, Ottawa Canada; a brother, Peter (Linda) van Haastrecht, Trenton Ontario; brothers-in-law, Arthur Bryan, Augusta, GA, David (Linda) Bryan, Lexington, SC, Bill (Ann) Bryan and a sister-in-law, Marie (Tom) Martin, all of North Augusta, SC. He was predeceased by brother-in-law, Dick Aldridge and sister-in-law, Beth Bryan. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Salvation Army, or the National Pancreatic Cancer Canada Foundation (
