AUGUSTA, Ga. - Joyce M. Leavitt, passed away in Augusta, GA on Sunday, August 23, 2015 after a long battle with complications of Alzheimer's. She was born on March 30, 1927 in Harrisburg, PA, the first child of William Gordon McKoy and Gladys McMann McKoy. She lived with her parents in several places including Hopewell, VA, Dandridge, TN and Rutledge, TN. She graduated from Rutledge High School in 1944 and entered the University of Tennessee that same year. She graduated with highest honors from UT in 1948 with a degree in Health, Physical Educations and Recreation and a minor in Zoology and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. After college, she began her teaching career at Belle Glade High School in Belle Glade, FL. While there she met and married H. Douglas Leavitt in December 1949. In between raising children, her teaching career spanned nearly 3 decades teaching high and junior high school physical education and health classes in Ft. Lauderdale, FL; Indianapolis, IN; and finally in Statesboro, GA at Statesboro Junior High School and Southeast Bulloch High School. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, William G. and Gladys M. McKoy of Rutledge, TN, her husband of over 53 years, H. Douglas Leavitt and grandson, Jeffery D. Leavitt. She is survived by her son, Lawrence D. Leavitt and his wife, Mary Beth of Yorktown, VA; daughter, Carole L. Davis and her husband, David of Augusta, GA; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Davis of Nashville, TN; Jonathan Leavitt of Houston, TX and Mary Katherine Davis of Augusta, GA; brother, William G. McKoy of Sonoma, CA. Joyce enjoyed many activities including traveling aboard, that included several trips to Europe. She also enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and gardening. For years, she was as active member of local garden and bridge clubs and attended the First Presbyterian Church of Statesboro until her move to Augusta in January 2009. She was also a member of the local Daughters of the American Revolution. The family will receive friends 10:00 am to 11:00 am Wednesday, August 26, 2015 in Hodges-Moore Funeral Home. A graveside funeral service will be held 11:30 am Wednesday, August 26, 2015 in Eastside Cemetery with Reverend Dan Lewis officiating.
