AUGUSTA, Ga. - Lyle died peacefully at home attended by loved ones. He is survived by his best friend and wife of 20 years, Sandra Sutton Self, and children: Jason Self (Emily) of Lincoln Park, MI; Audrey Olenzek (Ric) of Farmington Hills, MI; Lara Masterson (John) of Kennewick, WA; and step-daughter Jennifer Durrance White of Asheville, NC. Lyle is survived by his brother and pal Cary Self (Judy Wolter), of Cincinnati, Ohio. He was the devoted grandfather of Ethan, Maeve, Kyla, Alina, and Connor. Lyle was much beloved by in laws Joye Kaufman, David and Kay Sutton, Lynn Sutton Spain, and Elaine Philips Sutton, and nephew Bradley Self (Shelley) and niece Hillary Beck (Virgil). He was a good friend to many, especially Charlie & Pat Moye (Augusta), Phil Caldwell (Augusta), and Dr. Bill Trimmer (Hilton Head) and his wonderful loving neighbors of the Abbeys at West Lake community. A retired insurance executive, he proudly served his community, neighbors, relatives and friends in Augusta since moving here in 2000. Lyle was born in Washington Courthouse, Ohio, the first child of Bernard and Carolina Self. He graduated Washington Courthouse High School where he was an all-star athlete in football and track, and completed his formal education at Wilmington College (Ohio). Lyle was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army. He was an avid Buckeyes fan until his death. Lyle was a talented golfer and a learned history buff. He was passionate about national politics and the Republican Party. He loved music and theater, and was a gracious volunteer for the Lansing and Augusta orchestras, hosting and transporting guest artists, 'manning' the wine station for the SOA outdoor May concert and even dressed up as Santa and appeared on Pops at the Bell stage with a soloist singing to him Santa Baby! Lyle was also a volunteer for the LPGA and First Tee. In declining health the last five years of his life, the Wholeness services at Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church and the local chapter's exercise group of the National Parkinson's Foundation gave him much comfort and solace. Lyle served on the boards of the Meadowbrook Country Club (Detroit), St. John's Episcopal Church (Detroit), and Abbeys at West Lake. A memorial service is being planned, followed by a "Celebration of his Life" in the Abbeys. To honor Lyle in his life and death, first honor your family and be profoundly loyal to those you love. In lieu of flowers, Lyle would support contributions to Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church, Symphony Orchestra Augusta, or the Republican Party.
