GREENSBORO, N.C. - Mae Newsome Martin, 87, died on Friday, November 21, 2014, at Spring Arbor of Greensboro under the care of Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro. She was born in Glascock County, Georgia on September 16, 1927, daughter of the late James Lawson Newsome and Dovie Morgan Newsome. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 46 years, Oscar Edward Martin; 2 brothers; 3 sisters; and 1 granddaughter. She is survived by: son, Phillip Martin and wife Eva of Ruther Glenn, Virginia; daughter, Rebecca Yates and husband James, of High Point; daughter, Valerie Nelson, of Greensboro; son, Anthony Martin and wife Kim, of Fairview, TN; sisters, Betty Dixon (Harvey, Kingsland, Georgia) and Myra Poole (formerly of Martinez, Georgia); and her legacy lives on with 12 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and beyond. Mae was a long-time resident of Harlem, Georgia, and worked in the school system there for many years. She moved to High Point, North Carolina, in 2000. In both Georgia and North Carolina, she was a caring mother and grandmother; an avid gardener; and a volunteer of her time and energy. In the true spirit of giving, she requested that her body be bequeathed to the University of North Carolina for medical research. She and the other body donors were recognized at the Anatomy Memorial Service in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on December 7, 2015. An interment service will be held at the Harlem Memorial Cemetery on Monday, December 28, 2015 at 1pm. A celebration of life reception will be held in the Harlem Baptist Church Family Life Center immediately following the service.
