DeVore, M.D. NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. - Funeral Services for Margaret Bowen DeVore, M.D., 85, who entered into rest September 4, 2016, will be conducted Friday morning at 11 o'clock from the Posey Funeral Chapel. Dr. Gary C. Redding officiating. Interment in Greenwood Memorial Gardens at 2:30 PM. Dr. DeVore was a native of Troy, South Carolina, having made the Jackson-North Augusta area her home. She was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Jackson and was a member of the First Baptist Church of North Augusta. Dr. DeVore received her BA from Winthrop College in 1951 and graduated with a Medical Degree from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1955. Dr. Margaret was a member of the medical honor society AOA and finished second in her medical school class. While in medical school, she met and married Robert Newton DeVore, M.D., member of the Class of 1954. They practiced General Medicine in West Virginia before returning to South Carolina. Dr. DeVore completed her Anesthesia Residency at the Medical College of Georgia in 1964 and went on to serve as a professor of Anesthesia at MCG. In 1978, she received MCG's Distinguished Faculty Award. She served as MCG's first Associated Dean of Students in 1979 and was awarded MCG's first Department of Anesthesiology Residents' Choice Award in 1989, which was then named in her honor. Widowed in 1987, she married Dannie Fern Walker in 1989. She retired in 1991 as Professor Emerita of Anesthesiology and Associate Dean Emerita. Winthrop College awarded Dr. DeVore their highest honor, the Mary Mildred Sullivan Award in 1992 for "selfless dedication of time, energy and talent in service to others". MCG recognized her by naming the first endowed professorship in anesthesia in her honor in 2010. Survivors include four sons, R. Douglas (Connie) DeVore, M.D., Greenville, SC, Thomas L. (Terry) DeVore, North Augusta, J. Anthony (Tina) DeVore, St. Augustine, FL, and William G. (Karen) DeVore, M.D., Spartanburg, SC; a daughter, Ann D. (Rusty) Marsh, North Augusta; ten grandchildren. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday morning one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ruth McAlister Bowen Scholarship Fund, 701 Oakland Avenue, Rock Hill, SC 29733.
