NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. - Mrs. Marie Barbara Simpkins Johnson entered into rest on Saturday, January 23, 2016 at her residence. Funeral services will be conducted (today) Saturday, January 30, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. from Bethel A.M.E. Church, 623 Crawford Avenue, Augusta, Reverend Mark S. Pierson, pastor, officiating. The remains will lie in state at the church from 12:00 noon until the hour of service. The funeral procession will leave the residence at 12:15 p.m. Interment will be Monday, February 1, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC 29229. Born in Jackson, South Carolina on May 16, 1934, Marie was the eighth child born to the union of the late Jim Simpkins and Rena Simpkins. She was preceded in death by: four sisters, Carrie Bell Larke, Elizabeth Bradley, Mary Riley and Mozelle J. Simpkins; three brothers, Gary Simpkins, Jim Simpkins and Andrew Simpkins, leaving her the last member of her family. Mrs. Johnson accepted the Lord as her savior at an early age and joined Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson, South Carolina, where she served faithfully until she joined Bethel A.M.E. Church in Augusta, Georgia. While attending Bethel, she was very active on the Stewardess Board Number Two, Choraliers and in various other organizations. Marie's elementary education began at Immaculate Conception Academy, Augusta, Georgia, where she developed a great love of reading and writing. Marie received her high school diploma from the Immaculate Conception Academy, where she was crowned Queen of Immaculate Conception High School. She went on to receive a Bachelor of Art Degree in Elementary Education from Benedict College, Columbia, South Carolina, where she graduated Cum Laude and was initiated into Gamma Upsilon Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., she was also crowned Queen of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. She received a Master of Education Degree from South Carolina State University and a six year Education Specialist Degree from the University of South Carolina. She also did further studies at Indiana University. Marie's teaching career included working at Jefferson Elementary School, Langley, South Carolina, Summerfield Annex School as teacher and supervisor, and North Augusta Elementary School, North Augusta, South Carolina, where she retired after 34 years. Mrs. Marie Barbara Simpkins Johnson was a woman with uncommon spirit, love, and depth. She lived her life in the service of others. Whether by hand or by heart, her loving touch was unmistakable. So tender was her spirit that her nieces, nephews, and students considered her a second mother. This care and compassion infuse her 34 years of teaching, her service as a lifetime member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. her stewardship, other good works at Bethel A.M.E. Church and her service as treasurer on the founding board for the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History. For those who had the honor of knowing her, they know that an angel has departed their midst. She leaves to cherish her fond memories a loving husband of 53 years, Boston Johnson II; her son, Darryl V. Johnson (Shannon) of Orangeburg, South Carolina; a granddaughter, Jasmine Johnson of Orangeburg, South Carolina; one goddaughter, Dr. Kimberly Thurmond Bowdie of Weyman, Massachusetts, and godson, James Gallman, Jr. of Stamford, Connecticut; one brother-in-law, Walter Johnson, Jr., of Southfield, Michigan; two sisters-in-law, Lena Johnson, of Calhoun Falls, South Carolina and Alma Simpkins, of North Augusta, South Carolina and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
