AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mattie S. Gardner, a native Augustan was born May 28, 1911 and died on October 17, 2012 at the age of 101 years in the University Hospital. She was the widow of Mr. Edward Gardner. Graveside services will be conducted (today) Saturday, October 20, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. from Cedar Grove Cemetery. Reverend Dr. Charles E. Goodman, Jr. will officiate. Mrs. Gardner was a graduate of the Walker Baptist Institute of Augusta. Upon finishing she became an employee of the Pilgrim Health and Life Insurance Company and dutifully performed her job with true professionalism. She served Pilgrim for more than 40 years. Volunteering was one of Mattie's outstanding characteristics. She assisted by serving the needy at the Downtown Cooperative Church Ministries Food Bank, going several times a week until stopping at 99 years of age. Arts, crafts, quilting and sewing were her other passions that she shared with others at the Shiloh Comprehensive Community Center as a volunteer for many years. As a faithful member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, Mattie was a Sunday School Member of the Lydia Bible Class, the Quilting Ministry and the Mothers' Ministry (special selection). In her earlier years she served on the kitchen committee. She is survived by a brother, Robert A. Sims, Augusta, GA; nephews, Marion S. Sims and Robert A. Sims, II (Christianne), Detroit, MI; great nieces, Christianne Sims, Detroit, MI and Roberta A. Sims, Trumbull, CT; other cousins and friends, especially Mamie C. Dunn (James) Augusta, Ga. and Nellie Hampton (Oyama), Little Rock, AR; godson, William Smith; goddaughter, Lydia Prince. W. H.
