DEARING, Ga. - Mr. Monroe James Matherly, 67, entered into rest May 10, 2016 at his residence. Mr. Matherly was born in Wauchula, Florida to the late Ulysses Grant Matherly, Sr. and the late Lorena Grace Huskey Matherly. He grew up in Dahlonega, GA, where he graduated from Lumpkin County High School. Mr. Matherly earned a B.S. Degree in Biology and Physical Education from the University of North Georgia, a B.S. Degree in Criminal Justice from Brenau College, and a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice and Masters Degree in Education from the University of Georgia. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp. during the Vietnam Conflict attaining the rank of Captain. Mr. Matherly taught 8th grade in Dahlonega, GA while coaching basketball and football. In 1980 he joined the Georgia Department of Natural Resources as a Law Enforcement Officer/Game Warden and retired in 2003. He was a member of Thomson Presbyterian Church. In addition to his parents, Mr. Matherly was predeceased by his brother, Ulysses G. Matherly, Jr. Survivors include his beloved wife, Sara Ann Telford Matherly; sons, Grant Monroe Matherly and Ross Tylor Matherly; a daughter, Erica Dawn Matherly; a brother, Thomas J. Matherly; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Odum; and six grandchildren, Triston Gay, Reese Smith, Tylor Matherly, Chloe Matherly, Summer Matherly, and Emma Foster. Funeral services will be held at 11 o'clock a.m., May 14th, in the chapel of Beggs Funeral Home with Rev. Hank Wilson officiating. A graveside will be held at 1 o'clock p.m., Sunday, May 15th, at Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
