WADLEY, Ga.,Mr. Ollie W. Carter, 88, of Wadley, Georgia, died Monday, March 21, 2016 at University Hospital in Augusta, Georgia. The funeral will be at 11:00 am Thursday, March 24, at the Wadley Baptist Church with the Reverends Tom Harrison, Gene McCoy and Gary Carter officiating. Burial will be at the Wadley Baptist Cemetery in Wadley. Mr. Carter was a native of Surrency, Georgia and Valedictorian of the Surrency High Class of 1945. He was a 1950 graduate of the University of Georgia with a BSA degree in Agricultural Education. He later earned two Master's Degrees in Agricultural Education and in School Administration. Mr. Carter came to Wadley in 1950 as a Vocational Agriculture teacher at Wadley High where he taught for 14 years. He is an FFA Alumnus and an honorary FFA State Farmer. He served as Jefferson County School Superintendent for 20 years, 1965-1984. He was a deacon and member of the Wadley Baptist Church and taught the Livingston Sunday School Class for 35 years. He was a member of the Stonewall Lodge #98 for over 50 years. He is a life member of both the Georgia Retired Educators and the American Legion. He served in the United States Navy. He was a volunteer mission worker participating in several mission trips through the Ga. Baptist Builders, the Hephzibah Baptist Association and the Jimmy Carter work project with Habitat for Humanity. These mission trips involved mission work in Panama, Mexico, Jamaica, and several states. He served as Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts for several years and several of his scouts earned the coveted Eagle Scout Award. He is preceded in death by his wife, Gloria Hall Carter. Survivors include two sons Dr. Glenn Carter (Becky) of Hinesville, GA, and Gary Carter (Barbara) of DeLand, FL, one daughter Carol Justice (Graham) of Wadley, four grandchildren Robert and Rebecca Carter, Sydney and John Carter, 1 brother and 2 sisters. Pallbearers will be: Bobby Brett, Lintorn Brett, Charles Smith, Wynder Smith, Benjie Leaptrott, Dr. Dudley Gunn, Bobby Weeks, and Bill Cooper. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Deacons of Wadley Baptist Church, members of the Livingston Bible Class, Kenneth Kelly, J.D. Smith, Frank Gordy, Dr. Molly Howard, Dr. Gardner Hobbs, Farris M. Hudson, Herman Baker, and Isaiah Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 - 9 Wednesday evening at the Wadley Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Gideon's International or the Wadley Baptist Church (P.O. Box 759, Wadley, GA 30477).
