COLUMBIA, S.C. - Patricia Mealing Setzer passed away on Friday, September 23, 2016 at Palmetto Health Baptist following an extended and courageous battle with cancer. Pat spent her youth in North Augusta, South Carolina and graduated with honors from Furman University. A blind date between the Furman cheerleader "Pat" and a handsome Citadel Cadet "Hugh" led to a marriage that lasted 58 years until Hugh's death in 2014. During her life, she was a faithful member of many garden clubs in Georgia and South Carolina and served in leadership positions on the local, state and national level. Pat dedicated her life to the education, conservation and beautification of our environment. She was a Master Accredited Flower Show Judge and a Certified Landscape Consultant. Pat was a former District Director of The Garden Club of Georgia and former member of The Garden Club of Georgia State Board. She was past president of the Iris Garden Club and served on the Board of Garden Club Council of Greater Columbia, the Board of Columbia Green and the Garden Club of South Carolina Board of Directors. She was a current member of the Nationally Accredited Judges Club of South Carolina, Creative Study Club, National Flower Arrangers, Atelia and Creative Floral Arrangers of the Americas. She won numerous awards and accolades, including the Richland County Appearance Award for Individual Achievement for her leadership in the restoration of the Garden Club of South Carolina's Memorial Garden in downtown Columbia. In addition to her revitalization of the garden, she spearheaded an effort to have the Memorial Gardens listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Pat was instrumental in producing several publications, including Gardens of Georgia and Kitchen and Garden Secrets from South Carolina. She was very involved with Historic Columbia and once served as a docent at the Robert Mills House. In addition to her love of gardening, Pat was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She was a gourmet cook who enjoyed sharing her creations with her legions of friends. She had a love of travel and even her illness didn't stop her from participating in adventures. Just recently, she planned and enjoyed a trip with family and friends to Dublin, Ireland. Her love of life, desire to serve others and positive attitude is a legacy that she leaves behind. Pat is survived by three children, Ellen Setzer Suarez and her husband Brent Obenour of Falls Church, Virginia, Edward Hugh "Ted" Setzer, Jr. of Columbia, and Leigh Setzer of Atlanta, Georgia; grandson, Javier Alexander Suarez of Falls Church, Virginia; step-grandchildren, Kyle Obenour and his wife Michelle of Fallon, Nevada, Sarah Obenour of Falls Church, Virginia and Kate Obenour of Columbia; sister, Mary Thompson "Diddy" of North Augusta, South Carolina; and her beloved friend and caregiver, Hanunah Barton of Columbia.
