Businessman BEECH ISLAND, S.C. - Mr. Paul Bryson Blackburn passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on April 2nd, 2016. He was married to Mrs. Karen Atkinson Blackburn for 53 years. Mr. Blackburn was born May 20th, 1941 in Bath, SC to the late Hubert P. and Elizabeth Bratcher Blackburn. He served in the National Guard & Reserve from 1959-1967. He graduated from Augusta College in 1970 with a B.A. in Business Administration. He was the manager of Yancey Brothers Caterpillar Dealership, in Augusta, Ga from 1970-1984. He owned and operated J & L Motor Sales, Clearwater, SC from 1984-2000 and added J & L Tax Service in 1996 and J & L Gold Exchange and Pawn in 2007. He retired in 2014. Paul was a member of Piney Heights/Lakeside Baptist Church for 52 years. He served as a deacon for 30 years and also served as treasurer, taught Sunday School, was a Bible Quiz Coach and had a heart for missions. He loved to watch his grand children's sports activities. He enjoyed golf, bluegrass music and playing the banjo, but his favorite thing to do was spend time with his family that he loved and cherished and who loved and cherished him in return. Paul was married to the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Karen I. Atkinson on August 10th, 1962. He was the proud father of two daughters, Lori B. Baxley (Mark) and a beloved daughter, Karen Jill Blackburn, who preceded him in death in 1982. He was known as "Papa" to three grandchildren, who were his pride and joy: Kayla Baxley Whittle (Stacey), Warrenville, SC, beloved granddaughter, Lindsey Morgan Baxley, who preceded him in death in 2000 and Colby Grant Baxley (Brooke), of Warrenville, SC. "Papa" to a great granddaughter, who he lovingly named, "My Little Sweetheart", Sadie Violet Whittle. He was so excited anticipating the birth of twin great-granddaughters, Sawyer & Saylor Whittle. Paul also had two brothers, Charles Blackburn and Melvin Blackburn, both of whom preceded him in death. Funeral services will be at 2 o'clock, Thursday, April 7th, 2016 at Lakeside Baptist Church, Clearwater, SC with Rev. Tad Marshall officiating. Interment with military honors accorded will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Graniteville, SC. Pallbearers will include his two grandsons, Grant Baxley and Stacey Whittle, brother-in-law, D. T. Atkinson, Jr, and friends Larry Haney, Julian Farmer and Randy Howard. Honorary pallbearers are: his nephew, Melvin Blackburn, Jr, Tom Russell, Leonard New, Josh Durden (missionary to Kobe, Japan) and Sean Grubb.
