AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mrs. Peggy Schweers Smith Stephens, 83, entered into rest on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at University Hospital. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am tomorrow Thursday, December 6, 2012 at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church with Reverend Michael Lubinsky as celebrant. Interment will follow at Magnolia Cemetery. Mrs. Stephens was a native of Augusta and was a member of St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church. She was a graduate of Mount St. Joseph High School and Junior College of Augusta. She was retired from St. Joseph Hospital, now Trinity Hospital of Augusta. Mrs. Stephens was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She will be greatly missed and forever remembered for her laughter, her tremendous strength and love of life and family. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Roy H. Smith, her second husband, W. Hugh Stephens, her grandson, Michael McCarthy and her parents, John Bernard Schweers and Vera Connor Schweers. Family members, who survive are her daughters, Margie McCarthy (John J.) of Evans, GA, Maureen Smith of Augusta, son, Robert B. Smith (Cheryl) of Augusta, grandchildren, Kevin McCarthy (Marie) of Augusta, Brian McCarthy (Melissa) of Atlanta, Brittany Smith, Natalie Smith, both of Augusta and great grandchildren, Dayton McCarthy and Blair McCarthy. Pallbearers will be Matt Bickley, Brad Bickley, Rick Leverett, Bob Smith, Don Walker and Mike Ward. The family will receive friends today Wednesday, December 5, 2012 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Platt's Crawford Avenue.
