ORANGEBURG, S.C. - Richard "Dick" Lewis Carson, 94, of The Oaks in Orangeburg, died Friday, May 9, 2014. Funeral Services will be held 3:00 pm, Monday, May 12, 2014, at Pineview Memorial Gardens, 450 West Five Notch Road, North Augusta, SC. Dick was an only child born to the late Harold and Mary Strassler Carson on December 15, 1919, in Detroit, Michigan. They eventually settled in Terre Haute, Indiana, where Dick graduated from Garfield High School and Indiana State University (at that time, Indiana State Teachers College) with a degree in Business Education and a Master s degree in Business Administration. In the midst of his college work, he joined the Army Air Corps and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska during World War II. He was married in 1948 to Lorene A. Whitesell of West Terre Haute, Indiana, and they had two children, Jan Elaine and the late Steven Richard Carson. Dick worked most of his life for DuPont as an administrative manager and computer analyst. A job transfer to the Savannah River Plant in 1957 took the family to North Augusta, SC, where they lived until after Lorene s death in 1980. During those years, Dick was very active in Grace United Methodist Church, the Masons, and the North Augusta Exchange Club. Dick married Marguerite DuVall in 1981. Once retired from DuPont, they moved to Fripp Island, SC for 6 years, followed by Evans, GA for 18 years, where they were active members of Wesley United Methodist Church. The Oaks Retirement Community outside of Orangeburg has been their home since 2007. During these last few years, Marguerite has been a tireless, patient, and loving caregiver to Dick. Dick is survived by his wife, Marguerite; a daughter, Jan Sowell (and husband Biff) of Columbia; step-children, Gary DuVall (and wife Kitty) of Greensboro, NC, and Deanna McDonald (and husband Roy) of Cuthbert, GA; grandchildren, Carson Sowell Twombley (and husband Ashley) of Beaufort, SC, Jill Sowell of Louisville, Co, and Laura McDonald of Brunswick, GA; and great-grandchildren, Mac and Will Twombley, and Sydney McDonald.
