ULMER, S.C. - Robert Edward Connelly, Jr., 70, died Friday at his home. Born March 23, 1945 in Orangeburg, he was a son of Mrs. Elma Lazar Connelly and the late Robert Edward Connelly, Sr. From the age of two, his entire life was spent on the family farm. He was a lifelong farmer. Not only was farming his livelihood, it was his passion. A 1963 graduate of Allendale-Fairfax High School, he was co-owner and operator of Connelly Farms, Farmers Grain and Supply, and Lowcountry Oil Company. He was a former member of the board of trustees of both Allendale Academy and Andrew Jackson Academy. He was a board member of Southern Carolina Alliance. He was recognized by Gov. Hailey in 2015 as Allendale County Economic Ambassador. He served on the board of directors of Allendale County Farm Bureau from 1971 until 2005 and was county Farm Bureau president from 2005 until his death. He was a member of a number of farm agency committees and boards. A lifelong member of Bethel Baptist Church, he served as a deacon, secretary of the Men's Bible class and was a member of the Men's Ministry. He was a member of the Great Saltkehatchie Cemetery Committee. Surviving are his mother; his widow of 49 years, Mrs. Alma Marie Deer Connelly; two sons, Robert E. Connelly III and William Mark Connelly, all of Ulmer; a daughter, Jennifer C. Henzler (Travis) of Pelion; a brother, Keith Baynard Connelly, and a sister, Nancy C. Crim (Benjamin), both of Ulmer; six grandchildren, Austin Brandt Connelly, Alexis Anne Connelly, Jayna Elaine Connelly, Ashlyn Connelly Henzler, Karson MacKenna Henzler, and Leyton Travis Henzler. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 14, 2016 at 4:00 pm at Bethel Baptist Church near Sycamore with burial in the Great Saltkehatchie Cemetery, Ulmer. Visitation will be 4:00 pm- 7:00 pm Sunday at Keith Smith Funeral Service, 128 Water Street, Allendale, SC 29810.
