"Bob" "Bobby" THOMSON, Ga. - Robert L. Rabun Jr., 80, entered into rest at his residence on April 14, 2015. Mr. Rabun was been born in Thomson on November 6, 1934 and was a lifelong resident of the area. He was President of the Thomson High School Class of '52 and participated in sports and activities throughout his high school years including track and football. He was selected to the All-state football squad as a tight end. He graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in Industrial Management. He was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Following graduation, he worked for McDuffie County Builders Supply for many years prior to buying the business in 1970 from his father, founder R.L. Rabun, Sr. and continued as owner/operator. He was a member of Thomson Rotary Club where he served a term as President, was a Will Watt Fellow, was a Paul Harris Fellow and had a 56 year record of perfect attendance. He was a member of Thomson Presbyterian Church where he served on the Board of Directors, as treasurer, as a deacon, an elder and youth leader. He was a leader of Boy Scout Troop 333 from 1968 until 1975 and served on the Board of Directors of the Little River District of the Boy Scouts of America in 1972. He continued to volunteer to assist with the annual Cub Scout Olympics for many years. He served on the Board of Directors of the Thomson-McDuffie Recreation Department and was instrumental in procuring the land for the Sweetwater Recreation Complex. He was a coach for the Recreation Department in midget football and Little League Baseball for 9 seasons. The teams garnered championships in five of the nine seasons. Mr. Rabun was an active community volunteer, organizing and participating in local beautification campaigns, and taking roles in community events such as the early art festivals, blood drives, the Depot Dash road races and Relay for Life. Mr. Rabun was a devoted and loving husband, father and friend. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert Leon Rabun, Sr. and Florence Chance Rabun. He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Jean Ivey Rabun; five children, Robert L. "Bob" Rabun III and wife, Donna, Julie Rabun Gerlach and husband, Gene Gerlach, Jr.; Daniel Ivey Rabun and wife, Lynn, Gina Rabun McHatton and husband, Raymond and Lisa Rabun Spivey and husband, Scott; sister, Betty Rabun McKinney, and grandchildren, Lauren Rabun Webb (Tyler), Geoffrey Gerlach (Chasie), Allison Gerlach, Beth Gerlach, Chance Rabun (Michell), Levi Rabun, Heather McHatton Dunham (Jason), Matt McHatton, Amber Spivey, Mason Spivey, and Walker Spivey; and great-grandchildren, Ella Gerlach and Eli Gerlach. Graveside services will be held at 11 o'clock, a.m., Saturday, April 18, 2015 at Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens with Rev. Louis Miller officiating. Pallbearers will be: Chance Rabun, Levi Rabun, Geoffrey Gerlach, Mason Spivey, Walker Spivey, and Matt McHatton. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Thomson Rotary Club. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m., Friday at the funeral home. Beggs Funeral Home, 799 Cobbham Rd., Thomson, GA, is in charge.
