WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. - Robert Doyle Rutland, son of the late C. Doyle Rutland and Hercules W. Rutland, died peacefully after a short illness on May 24, 2015, at the age of 73. Born on September 8, 1941, he spent his childhood in Orangeburg, SC until moving to Jackson, SC in 1954. It was in Jackson that he acquired his passion for sports and began many lifelong friendships. Graduating from Jackson High School in 1959, he attended the Georgia Institute of Technology where he became a member of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. In 1967, he received his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree and moved back to Jackson with his growing family to work for Kimberly-Clark. Over the years, his career took him to Midland Steel in Columbia, Applied Engineering in Orangeburg, and Colite Industries in Columbia. As a highlight of his career, he was honored as a recipient of the top SC Energy Achievement Award on September 14, 1987, and was a winner of the DOE 1987 National Awards Program for Energy Innovations for his contribution to asphalt recycling. He enjoyed coaching youth baseball and football, traveling to new places, and visiting with special friends Coleman Buster Smith and Bill Bunny Hubbard. He was an enthusiastic sports fan and avidly followed Georgia Tech football. On April 2nd, 2000, he was thankful recipient number 211 of a transplanted heart at MUSC, where Drs. Crumbley and Van Bakel provided continual support. Bob was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Geraldine Hill Rutland, daughter Alyssa Rutland Hubbard, son Michael Ashley Rutland, and granddaughter Kimberly Hubbard, on whom he doted. He is survived by sisters Bonnie King of Evans, Georgia; Patricia Fentross (Harold) of Aiken; brother-in-law Edwin Hill (Mary) of Aiken; Mary Hall of New Smyrna Beach, Florida; and several nieces and nephews. The family expresses gratitude for the caregivers on ART 5E at MUSC for their help through this difficult time. A memorial gathering will be held on June 7, 2015, at 4:00 PM at Saluda Shoals Park, River Center, TD Bank Room. (5605 Bush River Rd., Columbia, SC.)
