TRENTON, S.C. - James Samuel (Sam) Shaver, 87, lifelong resident of Edgefield County, died February 16 at the Hospice Unit at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center. Born May 30, 1927, he was the last surviving child of the late James E. Shaver and Mary Idonia Riley Shaver. His brothers were Ervin, Charles, Johnny and Marvin Shaver and his sisters were Allie Quarles and Mamie Smith. He is survived by five nieces, Linda Dale and Virginia Shaver and Judy (David) Willis of Trenton, Mary (Steven) Phillips of Aiken, Mary Ann (Bill) Desider of Johnston; two nephews, Glenn (Betty) Shaver of Clinton and Charles M. (Rhonda) Shaver of Aiken; sister-in-law, Louise Shaver of Trenton; and numerous great-nieces and nephews. Sam served in World War II as part of the Army of Occupation in Japan for two years in the 11th Airborne Army unit. He was employed for many years as an electrician for the Graniteville Company. Following his retirement, he worked for several years at the recycling center on Highway 25. Sam was a gardener, builder, dreamer, and scholar and will be greatly missed by all who were privileged to have known him. Memorial services will be held at a later date.
