EVANS, Ga. - Shirley G. Weiksner of Martinez, GA passed away on September 4, 2015 from complications of cancer. Shirley was born on March 2, 1931 in Washington, DC to John Rawlings Garner and Edith Irene Tippett Garner. She was the oldest of four girls. As a child she enjoyed visiting her many relatives that lived in Upper Marlboro on a farm, milking cows, making homemade ice cream and playing with her cousins. She graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Biological Sciences then married her college sweetheart, Chuck, on March 7, 1953. Two years later she had her first child, son Mike, followed a couple years later by daughter, Mary. Shirley poured her energy into raising her children and supporting her husband in his career. When her children started school she worked several different part time jobs including teaching bacteriology at the University of Miami, being a popular primary substitute teacher reading Uncle Remus stories to the students, and examining tax forms for the IRS. Shirley also enjoyed sewing clothes, doing needlepoint, crocheting and knitting. After husband Chuck retired they enjoyed traveling, cruising, doll collecting, and family trips to the beach. Since her husband's passing, Shirley was tenderly cared for by the staff at Elmcroft Assisted Living and during the final days of her earthly life there, by the compassionate staff of MSA Hospice and Visiting Angels. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Chuck and sisters Jackie and Ethel. Shirley is survived by her children: J. Mike Weiksner, Sr (Susan) of Evans, GA, and Mary L. Hummel (Jim) of International Falls, MN, six grandchildren: Jennifer (Zach), Michael, Matthew, Dave (Diana), Bryce (Stasia), and Becky and five great-grandchildren: Chloe, Hailey, Jacob, Jaz and Eli, sister: Jeri, and many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at Elliott Sons Funeral Home at 4255 Columbia Road, Martinez, GA on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at 10:00 am. The family will receive friends following the service. Shirley was a member of Redeemer Presbyterian Church and asks that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Redeemer Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 2540 William Few Pkwy., Evans, GA 30809.
