AUGUSTA, Ga. - SFC RET Verlin C. Staab, 80, died Sunday, February 8, 2015 at home, with his family by his side. A Funeral Mass to celebrate Verlin's life will be held at 10 am, Thursday, February 12, 2015 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will be at Bellevue Memorial Gardens, Grovetown, GA. Mr. Staab was born on June 26, 1934 in Hays, Kansas, a son of the late Frank and Mary Staab. Mr. Staab was a US Army Veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars with 25 years of service. After retiring from the US Army, Mr. Staab began a Civilian Life. He worked in Heating & Air Conditioning for many years and Civil Service at Fort Gordon. After retiring, Mr. Staab focused his time and energy on a very long Honey-Do List that his wife Sonja accumulated over the years and to his grandchildren. Mr. Staab's favorite past time was baseball. He was a season ticket holder of the Augusta Greenjackets, formerly the Pirates, since 1988. When not attending the Greenjackets' home games or fulfilling his Honey-Do List, Mr. Staab was cheering for his grandchildren, Grant and Victoria, either on the baseball field or on the stage. Mr. Staab was a longtime parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was an extraordinary man and a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, Sonja G. Staab, his brother, Gerald Staab and sister, Nadine Hopkins, both of Kansas. Left to cherish his memories are his daughter, Katrina C. (Staab) Berzett and husband Wade of Augusta; grandson, Grant Mixon II and wife Havanne of Augusta; granddaughter, Victoria H. Mixon of Augusta; great-granddaughter, Karlee Noel Mixon and unborn great-grandson, Levi Bryce Mixon of Augusta; brothers, Delbert Staab and wife Jean of TX, Terrence Staab and wife Jacque of FL, Jim Staab and wife Terry of KS; sister, Virginia Chada of VA; in addition to sisters-in-law, Betty Staab of KS, Sophie Fenstermacher of TX, Liesel Paul of Germany; brother-in-law, Helmut Schuster of Germany; numerous nieces, nephews and godchildren. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 from 6-8pm with a Vigil Service at 7:30pm at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, 2524 Lumpkin Rd., Augusta, GA. In Honor of Verlin C.
