Bishop, Sr. EVANS, Ga. - William Brian Bishop, Sr. was born in Bronx, New York on June 28, 1963. His birth was celebrated by his mother Addie Mae Bishop (deceased). He entered into rest, quietly in his sleep, on May 16, 2016 at approximately 6:30 AM at the age of 52 years old. A celebration of Mr. Bishop's life will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at Platt's Belair Road Chapel with Rev. Robert Ramsey officiating. William joined the military and met Ja'net Smalls, whom he later married and had two sons, William II and Matthew. He received his high school diploma from Alfred E. Smith High School in the Bronx, New York. He later earned degrees from Bronx Community College (NY), John Jay College of Criminal Justice (NY), and Troy State University (GA). William was preceded in death by his mother Addie Mae Bishop and his brother, Vincent Cameron. He will be mourned by his wife and sons. Grief will be shared by his sisters Regina Cameron-Ogblu and Lawana (Leroy) Powe, both of Bronx, NY. Aunts: Melvena (Willie) Bishop of Charleston SC; Priscilla (Gus) Dutton of Lanham, Maryland; Mary (Waudelle) Jackson of Forestville MD; Ruth Doughty of Columbus GA; Bevalee (James ) Bryan of District Hts MD; Evalee (Larry ) Jones of Bronx NY. Uncle: Myers West of Garnville NY. William is also survived by his father and mother-in-law, James and Carrie Smalls of Huger, SC; brothers-in-law Darryl (Rosalyn) Smalls of New York, NY, and James (Janet) Smalls of Richmond VA, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, friends, colleagues, students, and former athletes. William served his country proudly as an Army officer in Operation Desert Storm/Shield, and Operation Just Cause. He achieved the rank of Captain and earned his Jumpmaster Airborne Wings. While in the military, he was honored with three Army Commendation Medals and two Army Achievement Medals. His heroics continued in civilian life in 1993, as reported by The Augusta Chronicle, when he was honored by the Augusta Police Department for heroically saving 5 people from a burning car on Riverwatch Parkway. Upon leaving the military, he was thrilled to serve in a new way as an educator, coach, Athletic Director, and Assistant Principal at Morgan Road Middle School. He transferred to Glenn Hills Middle School in the 2015/2016 school year, where he also served as an Assistant Principal and continued to impact the lives of many before being called home to be with the Lord after 20+ years in the Richmond County School System.
