AUGUSTA, Ga. - On Sunday morning February 8, 2015, at 6:00 AM, Mrs. Willie Lee (Zellars) Davis passed away from natural causes at Doctors Hospital in Augusta. Mrs. Davis, 93, grew up in Lincolnton, Georgia. Her parents were Hampton and Essie (Tucker) Zellars. She was the granddaughter of George and Juda Zellars and Joe and Lou Venna Tucker. She was the ninth of eleven siblings, She graduated as salutatorian from Lincoln County Training School. She also taught school at St. Luke Baptist Church when many of the churches were also one room schoolhouses. She married Augustus Davis, Jr. on Christmas Eve in 1943, days before he was deployed to the South Pacific during WW II. Three years later, when her husband returned, they moved to Augusta. In Augusta, Mrs. Davis worked as an insurance agent and at the VA Hospital from which she retired in 1986. She has been a member of the St. Luke Baptist Church for most of her life and organized the Usher Board and served as Chief Usher for several years. She was also a founding member of the Augusta Club #1 , a Bible study and church support group. Her husband and nine of her brothers and sisters preceded her in death. She leaves to mourn her passing her daughter Dr. Gloria (Marion) Toy; son Dr. Donald (Patricia) Davis; granddaughters, Dr. Tasha (Joel) Berrien and Jameda K. Davis; grandson, Donald Augustus Davis; great-grandchildren, Kahlil Davis and Katarra Rogers. Her remaining sibling is her brother, Wade (Lucy) Zellars, sister-in-law Elizabeth Lowe and a special niece who lived with her for a period of time, Constance Parker. Mrs. Anne Hampton was a devoted caregiver to Mrs. Davis for several years. Also devoting their time and talents in support and care of Mrs. Davis were Mrs. Lorretta McCain and Mrs. Francine McCoy. The family will receive friends at the W H Mays Mortuary Friday evening, February 13, 2015 between the hours of 6:00pm and 7:00pm. The memorial service for Mrs. Davis will be held at 12:00 PM, Saturday, February 14, 2015 at the St. Luke Baptist Church in Lincolnton, Georgia. The remains will lie in state prior to the service.
