NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - William P. Henderson, 76, passed away on February 9, 2013 after a long illness. Bill was a native of Augusta, Georgia and had been a resident of the Peninsula for 54 years. Bill enjoyed reading, traveling, sailing, woodworking, gardening and looking after his family. He attended the University of Georgia where he majored in physics. He received a Master s Degree in Economics from George Washington University where he was an adjunct professor in the Engineering Management Department. He joined the staff of the Langley Research Center (then NACA) in 1958 where he conducted research on advanced propulsion integration. Bill collaborated on many of the military planes that are now in use today. Later in his career he was chief of the Applied Aerodynamic Division. He received many awards including NASA s exceptional service medal, AIAA Aerodynamics medal and, Langley s special achievement award. He retired in 1996 after 40 years of service. Bill was a member of Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church and a former member of the Hampton Yacht Club He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Fickling and Robert Glenn Henderson, a brother Robert Glenn Henderson, Jr. and an infant daughter. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Martha Stafford Henderson; a son William P. Henderson, Jr. of Zurich, Switzerland and a daughter Laura A. Henderson of Norfolk, VA. He is also survived by two sisters, Glenda Henderson of Charlotte, NC and Mary Hull of Augusta, GA. The family would like to thank the staff at Northampton and the Hospice of Virginia staff for their compassion and care during Bill s illness. There will be a private interment. A celebration of his life will be held at Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church on Thursday, February 14, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. A reception will be held at the church after the service.
