AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Reverend Dr. James Anderson Carpenter, 85, husband of the late Mrs. Mary Louise Dunbar Carpenter, entered into rest on Thursday, October 17, 2013 at Brandon Wilde. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at 10:30 AM at Summerville Cemetery with The Reverend Robert D. Fain officiating. A native of Shelby, NC. He held degrees from Wofford College, B.A., Duke University, B. D. , and Cambridge University, PhD. He was instrumental in building St. Timothy's Church in Alexandria, La. before moving to General Theological Seminary in New York City where he had received his S.T.B. and became Sub-Dean and Mary Crooke Hoffman professor of theology. In addition he was the author of two books on theology. The Rev. Dr. Carpenter was a member of and also an assisting priest at The Church of the Good Shepherd. Survivors are his sons, Mark Dunbar Carpenter in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, James Anderson Carpenter, Jr. in Mendham, New Jersey and foster son Andrew C. Brown in London as well as his sister-in-law, Joan Dunbar O'Conner at Brandon Wilde, Evans GA. In lieu of flowers please make memorial donations to The Church of the Good Shepherd, c/o Discretionary Fund, 2230 Walton Way, Augusta, Georgia 30904. The family would like to express their gratitude to the nursing staff of Brandon Wilde and a special thanks to Mr. Clyde Childers.
