GRANITEVILLE, S.C. - Entered into eternal rest on Saturday, February 14, 2009, Douglas L. Padgett, age 66 of Graniteville, S.C., beloved husband for 45 years to Sue Brantley Padgett and son of the late Herbert Lane Padgett and the late Janette Barton Padgett. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Tammy P. (Bobby) Glover, of Graniteville, S.C.; brothers, Charlie (Jackie) Padgett of Graniteville, S.C. and Dennis (Karen) Padgett of Warrenville, S.C.; sisters, Becky (Walter) Couch of Monroe, Ga. and Jennie Padgett of Warrenville, S.C.; grandchildren, Breannah Thomas, Ariannah Glover, Kodie and Jordan Smith, Gwen and Bobby Glover, III; two nieces and three nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cindy Padgett Smith. He was born in Lexington County, S.C. but has been a lifelong resident of Aiken County, S.C. He was retired from Phifer NutraSweet. He was a US Navy Veteran. He was a dedicated member of St. John United Methodist Church in Graniteville, where he served as Chairman of Trustees, Assistant Treasurer, President of United Methodist Men, and a Sunday School Teacher and was an active member of the Yard Dogs; yes, it is easy to see that he loved working for the Lord and his church. He was also a member of the Midland Valley County Club. The family stated that he was an avid golfer, a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, who just adored his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. He was a likeable person with a pleasing personality and was always willing to help his fellowman; yes, the world could use a lot more men like Doug Padgett. Most definitely, "Earth's loss is Heaven's gain". A celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at 2:00 PM at St. John United Methodist Church in Graniteville with Rev. Alan Quarles and Rev. Jody Padgett officiating. The interment will follow at the Graniteville Cemetery. The Men's Sunday School Class of St. John United Methodist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends this Tuesday evening, February 17th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Napier Funeral Home. Memorials, in Doug's honor, may be made to St. John United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 38, Graniteville, S.C. 29829. Mr. Padgett will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Padgett family, please know you are in my thoughts and prayers. I did business with Doug for many years when he was at NutraSweet. As you read these entries you will see how many lives Doug touched. He touched mine in many ways. I looked forward to coming to work just so we could chat. We talked of family, friends, and much about life. But most of all, he made me laugh! We always ended the conversation with something that made us laugh, "It just makes the day better" he would say, and it always did.
Thinking of you all..

I worked with Doug at NutraSweet and I can tell you Doug was a honorable man. He was straight-forward, honest, and had plenty of courage to do the right thing. Most importantly, the man LOVED his family, Jesus, and golf. I'm grateful for, and will never forgot, the personal and professional advice he gave to me. Doug was a wise man and God blessed him with a "magnetic" personality. It is said, a man is measured by what he meant to his family and friends. I can tell you Doug was valued by many.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Sue and family. Doug’s life did speak for itself. I met him playing golf and learned much from him, but the larger lessons were about life and “how you never give up on the game.” His dedication to his family and to God and his church were inspiring. His favorite putter “Ping” and he did some amazing things, but that could be said even more so of his character and humanity. I thoroughly enjoyed many afternoons of golf with him and he will be greatly missed as a golfer but more so as a person. Gods blessings, Margaret and Dale Greene,
Dale Greene

My thoughts and prayers go out to Doug's family and friends. I have such fond memories of wonderful golf days at Midland Valley Country Club with Doug. I worked at the club many years ago and had the pleasure of playing golf with Doug and seeing him on a regular basis, he was a pleasure to be around- a true gentleman. I will never forget his pleasant personality, even after 15 years.
