WASHINGTON, Ga. - Mr. Jack Morgan Rhodes, 88, of 805 Cloverhurst Dr. entered into rest on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at his residence. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the Independence United Methodist Church in Tignall, GA. with Dr. Harold Lawrence, Dr. Jim Cantrell and Rev. Ben Walker officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Ricky Lindsey, Larry Callaway, Charles Rhodes, Jr., Chad Drake, Perry Norman, Allen Rhodes, Randy Lindsey and Todd Drake. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Charles Watts, Mac Andrews, Tim Jackson, Hugh Keener, Richard Gammon, Leon Aycock, Roy Harrison, Malcolm Chafin, Tom Jackson and David Tyler. Mr. Rhodes was a lifelong resident of Wilkes County and the son of the late Sam Hawes Rhodes and the late Annie Ruth Dye Rhodes. He was a graduate of Wilkes County High School and a 1943 graduate of North Georgia College where he volunteered for the United States Army Air Corp. Mr. Rhodes received his fighter pilot license at the age of 20. He served his country with honor during World War II and was a P.O.W. Mr. Rhodes served 31 years as a Rural Mail Carrier at Tignall and 7 years as Postmaster until his retirement in 1987. Mr. Rhodes was a member of Independence United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent and other capacities for a number of years. He served as Chairman of Wilkes County Selective Services Board for 10 years until it was discontinued, was a charter member of Wilkes County Cattlemens Association and was named Cattleman of the Year in 1988. Mr. Rhodes is a former member of Rotary International, named Rotarian of the Year in 1995 and is a Paul Harris Fellow. He was director emeritus of Wills Memorial Hospital Foundation. Survivors include his beloved wife of 66 years, Jean Price Rhodes; four brothers, Francis M. Bubba Rhodes of Augusta, GA., Charles Rhodes and Freddie Rhodes of Washington and Glenn Rhodes of Tignall; three sisters, Peggy Rhodes Callaway and Phyllis Rhodes Drake of Washington and Olivia Rhodes Norman of Lincolnton, GA.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Rhodes was also preceded in death by a brother, Sam Rhodes, Jr. and two sisters, Virginia Rhodes Lindsey and Nita Edwards Riley. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Independence United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, in care of Mr. David Tyler, P.O. Box 342, Washington, GA. 30673.
