THOMSON, Ga. - Mr. Henry Samuel Chip Atkins, Jr., 68, entered into rest July 15, 2013. Mr. Atkins was born in Augusta, Ga. on August 1, 1944. He graduated from the Junior College of Augusta in 1964 where he was also a member of the golf team.In the fall of 1964, Athens came calling. He graduated from UGA in 1966. He was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. He remained in Athens where graduated from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1969, being named Top Tier. Chip began his legal career in Augusta, but grew fond of the rural atmosphere and country living. He moved to Greensboro, GA where he shared a successful law practice with Miles Walker Lewis. After moving to Watkinsville, GA he decided to give politics a try and was elected Chairman of the 10th District of the Republican Party and was selected as a delegate for the Republican National Convention in 1988. Ultimately, Chip ended up in Thomson some 20 years ago, but his heart and the majority of his practice remained in Greensboro. Outside of his law practice, his main hobbies were following the Georgia Bulldogs and the Masters Tournament. He was also an avid race fan and loved going to Nascar races with his father and brother back in the 50's and 60's. His three heroes have always been Abraham Lincoln, Bobby Jones and A J Foyt. Chip had the pleasure to serve as a past president of his district chapter of the Lions Club. He received the Annual Indigent Award from The Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers in 1988 and was made a life member. He loved practicing law and was always available to help a client reach resolution. He had great respect for the legal system, the judiciary and fellow attorneys. Chip will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be greatly missed by all, but never forgotten. Chip lived life on his terms. In addition to his parents, Chip was predeceased by two sons, Henry Samuel Atkins, III (Sam), 1988: Paul Micah Atkins, 1995; and his close nephew, Charles R. Atkins, Jr. (Charlie), 2012.
