AUGUSTA, Ga. - Katherine (Kitty) L. Herndon Bartley, RN, Ret First Lt. of the Army Nurse Corp, age 91, passed away on September 13, 2013 in Augusta, GA. Born October 25, 1921 in Bartow, FL., lived in Brunswick, GA. and resided in Grovetown, GA. She attended Basic Training at Camp Rucker, AL. Kitty received decorations and medals while serving the European African Middle Eastern Campaign, American Campaign and World War II Victory. Katherine retired December 14, 1946 as a member of the N-764 652 as First Lieutenant of the 9957th Technical Service Unit of the Surgeon General's Office at the Oliver General Hospital in Augusta, GA. She began her civilian employment at the Georgia Veterans Uptown Division. She retired from the Georgia VA after completing 33 years of service to the US Government Veterans Administration October 3, 1987. Kitty was a member of St. Mary's on the Hill Catholic Church and the CSRA Women's Augusta Golf Association in Augusta, GA. Kitty loved her grandchildren and the game of golf. She was an avid golfer and was known for her red hair and infectious genuine caring smile. She was the CSRA Women's Augusta Golf Association Montenyohl Championship Winner in 1973, 1975, 1977 and 1978. Kitty was preceded in death by her parents Sydney and Edytha Herndon (Wilcox) of Brunswick, GA.; her husband James L. Bartley, Jr. of Augusta, GA. and grandson James R. Bartley of Evans, GA. She is survived by her daughter, Katherine Adelle Bartley, Grovetown, GA.; son, James L. Bartley III of Evans, GA.; granddaughter Heather Bartley Edwards and grandson-in-law Eric Edwards of Augusta, GA. and her sister Dottie Pringle of Grovetown, GA. On behalf of the family we wish to extend a special Thank you to the staff on the 4th Floor East at Doctors Hospital and to Dr. Habib for the excellent care they provided to her during her illness.
