Upon graduation from Nursing School she entered the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and was commissioned a Lieutenant. While overseas she met her future husband, First Sergeant Claude Buck Landreth. Married in February 1946, the young couple moved to Augusta, Georgia where Buck was stationed at Camp Gordon. Evelyn continued to serve her country as a nurse for Veterans Affairs at Linwood and Forest Hills VA Hospitals where ultimately she served as Operating Room Nursing Supervisor. Before her retirement from the VA in 1980, she was a key member of the Surgical Transition team responsible for moving the entire Surgical/Operating Room Unit from Forest Hills to the VA's present location. She and Buck raised a family and subsequently retired in Augusta, GA, enjoying many years of traveling the United States in their RV. She was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Order of the Eastern Stars. She is a former member of both West Lake Country Club (Social) and West Lake Women's Club. She was also a long time avid Atlanta Braves baseball fan. As an Army Nurse, Army Wife, Army Mom, and VA Nurse she dedicated her entire life in selfless service to her nation and thousands of untold military men and women. She cared for others and never thought of herself, making a positive impact in the lives of others that cannot be measured in human terms.
