George Simkins Obituary

AUGUSTA, Ga. - George Bryan Simkins, Jr. (B to his close friends and family) died February 4, 2015. Born in Augusta in 1961, he enjoyed life to its fullest, even as a young boy and through his final day. With his razor sharp wit and keen sense of humor, he endeared himself to everyone he ever met; and through his prodigious musical talent, was gifted with the rare ability to touch people's hearts at any level. Bryan demonstrated an impressive ability to understand even the most complex subject matter; but with his generous spirit, always maintained a desire to share his thoughts and interests with anyone, which was a gift that served him well, personally and professionally. He was a graduate of Christ School, Arden North Carolina, and attended Clemson University. He served seven years in the United States Navy on the USS Josephus Daniels. He received a BS degree from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA after which he pursued a career as a medical researcher. Survivors include his daughter, Sarah Frances Simkins of Norfolk; mother, Frances Robinson Merry of Augusta; father and stepmother, Bryan and Sally Lofton Simkins of Augusta; two sisters, Frances Merry Simkins of Los Angeles and Robin Simkins Pongonis and her husband, James A. Pongonis Jr. of Marietta, and nieces, Anne Briscoe, Janie, Libby and Margaret Pongonis. A graveside service will be held at Hammond Cemetery in Beech Island, S.C. on Friday, February 6 at 3 p.m. with the Rev. George Muir of St. Paul's Episcopal Church officiating. Pallbearers will be N. Turner Simkins, Nathaniel T. Simkins Jr., Leroy Hampton Simkins Jr., N. Dudley Baird Jr., John N. Baird and Eugene Gilbert. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday at Thomas Poteet and Son Funeral Directors, 214 David Road, Augusta. Please sign the guestbook at www.thomaspoteet.com.

To Merry, Sally, and George - On this day of remembrance of B, I hope that perhaps some of your pain and loss might be replaced with the loving memories of what a truly special man B truly was. I'm sure there will always be a huge piece of your hearts missing but please know how blessed all who knew B were touched by his life and legacy. Heartfelt prayers to you always.

Much love to all. Just hate being here in CA and not in Beech Island. Know tomorrow will be a lovely day and a time of fond memories, like our tunnels through the hay barn and jumping off rafters into the cotton trucks. Not to mention B and his drum set on Henry St as a little boy. Love you.
