SWAINSBORO, Ga. - Durden-Hudson Funeral Directors announces the death of Mr. J. Carlton "Jay" Lawson, age 72, of Swainsboro, GA, on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at the Emanuel Medical Center after an extended illness. Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at 11:00 AM in the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Scott Brenton officiating, assisted by Sid Shepard and Elder Will Martin. Interment will follow in the Sardis Primitive Baptist Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 5-8 PM. Pallbearers are Neal Lawson, Carter Lawson, Andy Worthington, Bill McWhorter, Doyle Kersey and Trojan Harrison. Honorary Pallbearers will be Eddie Andrews, Carson Cross, Henry Curl, Gary Curry, Alex Grindler, Mutt Kennedy, Harry Martin, Greg Newsome, Ezra Price, Sheriff Tyson Stephens, Wilbur "Sonny" Stephens, employees and elected officials of Emanuel County, Clerks of the Middle Judicial Circuit, employees of L & M Farms, Sherry Akins, Tommy Castleberry, Chess Fountain, Teresa Gay, Daley Powell, Judge Marvin Hartley (Ret.), Judge Walter J. McMillan (Ret.), Judge Richard McNeely, Judge Robert "Bobby" Reeves, Judge Kathy Palmer, Judge Don Wilkes, Judge Ronald Wiggins, Jerry Cadle, Marnique Oliver, Hayward Altman, Franklin Edenfield, James Brown, Rep. Butch Parrish, Rufus Youmans, Don Flanders, Dr. Dorsey Flanders, Morris Trappnell, Matthew Waters, Lovette Bennett and Julie Holloway. Mr. Lawson was born June 6, 1942 in Swainsboro, GA to the late J. Carl Lawson and Ida Pearl Neal Lawson. He attended the Emanuel County School System and graduated from Swainsboro High School in 1959. Following high school he enrolled in the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia and graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Finance. Following college, Mr. Lawson worked in Athens and Macon as an insurance adjustor before returning to his home in Emanuel County and running for political office. He was Chairman of the Emanuel County Chapter of the American Red Cross, was elected Clerk of Superior and State Court of Emanuel County, serving 40 years, received Clerk of the Year Award in 1991, was recognized as Outstanding Young Man of the Swainsboro Jaycees in 1975 and retired in 2012. He is a member of First United Methodist Church of Swainsboro where he served on the Administrative Board. He was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Janena Lawson Survivors include: his wife of 41 years: Ann Powell Lawson of Swainsboro, GA; one daughter: Andrea (Andi) Carlisa Lawson McKeever (Greg) of Savannah, GA; one son: Jason Edward Carl Lawson (Katie) of Watkinsville, GA; four grandchildren: Ericka Ann McKeever and Lawson Gabriel McKeever of Savannah and William Carlton Lawson and Jack Oliver Lawson of Watkinsville, GA; one brother: Jimmy Neal Lawson Sr. (JoAnn) of Forsyth, GA; one aunt: Mrs. Lynne Paul Neal of Madison, GA; two nieces, Terralane Terwilliger McCarty (Ian) of Menlo Park, CA and Gaylyn Lawson Cole (Jim) of Forsyth, GA; two nephews, Jimmy Neal Lawson Jr. (Julie) of Bishop and Carter Albert Lawson (Jennifer Owens) of Charleston, SC.
