John Lewis Finley Obituary
Finley, John Lewis Age 92, of Hinckley, IL passed away on Sunday, September 29. He was born on May 18, 1921, the son of Patrick Henry and Pauline Etta (Lash) Finley of Big Rock, IL. John was united in marriage on November 17, 1945 to Miss Eve Krizanovich and they then spent the next 68 years together. Mr. Finley proudly served his country during World War II as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. John was stationed in the South Pacific Theater and also fought in the Battle of Peleliu. Starting his career in law enforcement as a deputy in the Kane County Sheriff's Department, he worked with the U.S. Department of Treasury as one of the original sky marshals, transferring to the U.S. Justice Department as a Deputy U.S. Marshal. John was also a private pilot and flew for many years, with a special fondness for Stearman biplanes. Mr. Finley was involved for many years with Nelson Funeral Homes. He was also a member of the Big Rock American Legion Post #529 and the Shabbona Masonic Lodge #374. A strong, compassionate and dynamic man, John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle who is deeply missed by family and friends. John is survived by his wife, Eve Finley of Hinckley, IL; his children, Jeffrey L. (Shelley) Finley of Plato Center, IL, John G. (Lynette) Finley of Naperville, IL and Karen L. Finley (Krizanovich) of London, England; his grandchildren, Nicole (Rick) Schwarz, Melanie Finley, Peter (April) Finley and Andrea (Deep) Buch, Vittoria Finley and Corinne Finley, nephews Pat Finley and Brent Finley, great-nephew Ryan Finley, as well as four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Michael P. Finley killed in action on May 8, 1967 while serving in the Vietnam War; his brothers, Lawrence Finley and Earl Finley; his sister Opal Anderson and her son John Anderson. Funeral Services for Mr. Finley will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, October 3, 2013 at the Nash-Nelson Memorial Chapel, 141 North Maple Street in Hinckley, IL with Pastor Kris Delmore officiating. A graveside service with military honors will follow in the Big Rock Welsh Cemetery in Big Rock, IL. Friends may visit from 4:00 until 8:00 PM on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at the Funeral Home in Hinckley, IL.
