Thomas "Tom" Karich Obituary
Karich, Thomas Steve "Tom" 87, died Saturday, March 22, 2014 in his home from melanoma. Born in Duluth, MN on May 19, 1926, he was the son of Stojan and Mary Pocrnich Karich. After high school, he enrolled in the Navy, and during WWII worked on the USS Wolverine, where he met Jimmy Stewart. He finished his war efforts at Chicago's Water Tower. Subsequently, he graduated from the University of Minnesota-Duluth, whereupon he taught math and coached basketball for six years at Mooseheart school, Mooseheart, IL. He taught math at Jefferson Middle School, Aurora, IL, and during his 28 year tenure he taught night school several years at Aurora University, and refereed high school football and basketball games. Tom was known for telling jokes, playing cards, recounting stories (introducing two brothers, finding a Croatian family friend, seeing Tito, and getting Russian circus tickets), and honoring his Croatian heritage. He was preceded in death by his mother; father; sister, Helen, and son, David. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Anne Carolyn Karich; son, Stephen Karich (wife Barbara) and his children, Kalin and Thomas "Tom"; son David's children, Lindsay, William "Bill", and Andrew "Drew"; daughter, Margaret "Peg" Ghering and her children, Kay and Julia; daughter, Susan "Sue" Karich; brother, Milan Karich (wife Helen); sister, Anna Mae Lowenstein (husband Larry deceased), and many nieces and nephews. Tom's family thanks the staff of Season's Hospice for their compassionate care.
