Laurie Brunson was the first neighbor to greet us when my husband and I moved in next door. We were delighted to discover that we were somewhat related...distant cousins-by-marriage. After our husbands died, we joked that we were each other's "nearest living relative", if only in the distance between our houses.
I considered her a kindred soul. We shared a love of books, music, art, cats, wild birds, working with our hands and a strong christian faith. And although we didn't see each other everyday, we always enjoyed visiting together.
She was fiercely independent, kept her house neat and regularly worked in her yard.
She had a keen memory,a quick wit and a wonderful sense of humor.
The day I saw her newspaper on the driveway at 10:00 A.M., I thought she was doing extra cleaning or was really, really busy, but when the paper was still there at 2:00 P.M., I tried to call her. Then I took the key she had left with me and went in. I called her name and she answered,"In here!" She had fallen around 6 o'clock the night before and was unable to move. How I wished I had gone in at 10:00 instead of waiting those extra 4 hours.
While we waited for the paramedics, she gave me Bonnie's number and the number for the pool man who was due to come that day and would have found the gate still locked. When help came, she easily told the paramedics where to find the list of her medications, and when she had last had her insulin shot.
Every time I visited her in the hospital, in rehab, or any of the nursing homes, she greeted me by name and always asked about the neighbors.
I will miss her, but I have no doubt that she is with Jesus and filled with joy!

Gone But Not Forgotten
A precious one from us has gone,
A voice we loved is stilled,
A place is vacant in our home,
Which never can be filled,
God in his wisdom has recalled,
The boon his love had given,
And though the body slumbers here,
The soul is safe in Heaven.
