Grinstead, Dr. Kenneth L.
85, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away August 29, 2010. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Eleanor Grinstead of Ann Arbor, MI and his four children from a former marriage, Diane Grinstead of Maricopa, AZ, Larry Grinstead of Phoenix, AZ, Karen Hill of Phoenix, AZ and Julie Grinstead of New York, NY. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Preceding him in death are his mother, Lois Pennington, his father Carl Grinstead, his step father Jack Pennington, his brother Maurice Grinstead and his sister Bonnie Schoene. Kenneth was born in Clio, Iowa and raised in the nearby town of Letts, where his father worked as an engineer on the Rock Island Railroad. He served his country honorably in the United States Army during World War II while stationed in Germany. After the war, he obtained a bachelor's degree from Iowa Wesleyan College, and then went on to receive a master's degree and PhD from the University of Iowa. In 1964, he and his family moved to Ypsilanti, MI where he served as professor in the Dept of Education at Eastern Michigan University until his retirement in 1989. During his professorship he wrote two books on the subjects of Michigan school law and teacher tenure. After retirement, Kenneth was inducted into the Michigan Educators' Hall of Fame. He enjoyed golf, fishing, gardening, baseball, playing bridge and the horse races. He was a wonderful father and husband who will live forever in our hearts. Interrment, with full military honors, took place on November 12, 2010 at Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, Phoenix, AZ. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at The Court in Surprise,AZ, as well as Hospice of the Valley for the loving care and compassion shown their father and grandfather during his last days--they were certainly angels of mercy.
