Cooke, Cynthia Blanchard
Cynthia Blanchard Cooke passed on peacefully after a long and courageous battle against Alzheimer's on January 27, 2013 in Scottsdale, Arizona, surrounded by her loving family. Cynthia is survived by her husband of over 50 years, Berkley T. Cooke, son Michael T. Cooke of Phoenix, Arizona, daughter, Alicia Cooke Griffiths, son-in-law, Douglas M. Griffiths and two granddaughters, Helen Blanchard Griffiths and Claire Cooke Griffiths. The Griffiths currently reside in Maputo, Mozambique, Africa where Doug is serving as the American Ambassador. Additional immediate family includes sister, Anne Blanchard Gascoigne of Adrian, Michigan and brother-in-law, Ronald W. Cooke and sister-in-law, Lise Cooke of Houston, Texas. Cynthia was the daughter of long time Hudson physician and surgeon, Dr. and Mrs. Lowell E. Blanchard. After growing up in Hudson, Cynthia attended high school at Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin prior to attending the University of Michigan
where she received both BBA and MBA degrees. Upon graduation in 1961, she and Berkley married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hudson, Michigan and began their 50 plus year life together living first in Scarsdale, New York, Bloomfield Michigan, Houston, Texas and last but longest, Scottsdale, Arizona. Cynthia returned to Devil's Lake, Michigan every summer, where she nourished strong ties with family and friends. After the kids were grown in Texas, Cynthia helped launch a swimming pool company where she excelled at designing and selling pools. Throughout her life, Cynthia served on a number of boards for non-profit organizations, including as a Chairperson. Cynthia was a dynamic, vigorous and engaged person who traveled widely with Berkley and drew great strength from her faith. Cynthia was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will be sorely missed. Burial will be in the family plot in Hudson, Michigan. Arrangements will be private with a memorial mass planned for mid-summer when the family can gather from around the world.
