(Nee Carter) Helen, October 13, 1923 - October 15, 2013. Helen celebrated her 90th birthday on Sunday, October 13 with 30 family members and friends attending the party. Helen passed away peacefully in the early morning on Tuesday, October 15. Helen was born to William Harold and Mary Pearl Carter in Olathe, Kansas. She was raised in Miami, Arizona along with her sisters Betty Ann, Vi and Perky. She attended Arizona Normal Teachers College (now Arizona State University) where she received her teaching degree. She married Allan Baker and they lived in Clifton, Arizona with their daughters Marilyn and Dorothy. She taught in the Clifton School District at the Laugharn Elementary School for many years. In 1977, as Arizona Teacher of the Year, she was nominated for National Teacher of the Year. Helen was a devoted and loving daughter, wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother (Gigi), and friend. She was a highly respected teacher who cared deeply about her students and their educational development. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Theta Chapter and served in a number of capacities, including President of the chapter. Helen was active in the Presbyterian Church of Clifton and Shepard of the Hills Church in Morenci, Arizona serving as a Sunday School Teacher, Deacon and Elder. After her retirement she served as a tutor for the literacy program and on the Board of Trustees of the Greenly County Library. Helen moved to Chandler to live with her daughter and son-in-law Dorothy and Kenyon De Laney and their three children. She was active in the Chandler Presbyterian Church and served as a Sunday School Teacher and Deacon. Helen led a joyful and fulfilling life, focusing on and delighting in the happiness of those around her. She was an exemplary role model and a source of guidance for family and friends. Helen was predeceased by her husband Allan "Buddy" Baker, her sisters Elizabeth Ann Edens and Edith Vivian Walley. She is survived by her daughters, Marilyn Baker-Madsen (Carl), Dorothy Vivian De Laney (Kenyon), her sister Mary Pearl "Perky" Carter, grandchildren Shannon, Andrew and Daniel De Laney (Michelle), Stacey Pasquale (Michael), Brad Madsen (Stephanie), great grandchildren Michael Delaney Otero, Jason De Laney Gonzales, Taylin and Nathan De Laney Watson, Maggie and Maria Pasquale, numerous nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews. Helen was loved by family and friends throughout her long life. She will be missed beyond words. A celebration of her life will take place at the Chandler Presbyterian Church, 1500 West Germann Road, Chandler, AZ on Friday, November 1, 2013 at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to the , 2020 E. Woodside Ct., Gilbert, AZ 85297. The family extends its gratitude to staff of the , especially Lori, Theresa and Rose, for the loving care they provided to Helen.
