Brimhall, Dwayne Butler
84, of Mesa, AZ passed away on June 25, 2013. He was born to E. R. & Marita Butler Brimhall in the mining town of Dos Cabezas, AZ, on October 11, 1928, where Dwayne's father was teacher
& principal of the one-room schoolhouse. At the age of 5, the young couple brought Dwayne to Mesa, AZ, where he was raised in the small town full of family & friends. Through the years, they were joined by a brother, Rae Elbert and sisters Marilyn, Mocella & Marita. Dwayne recounted many stories about growing up in Mesa. A highlight of youth was receiving his Eagle Scout award at the same time his scout master father received his. The Brimhalls spent cool summers in the White Mountains, camping & fishing with cousins. After graduating from Mesa High in 1946, he started classes at ASU, and attended dances at the old Mezona. From 1948-50, he served an LDS mission to Hawaii, often helping as scout leader or schoolteacher. Returning to Mesa, Dwayne continued at ASU, where he concentrated on school and on a pretty Mesa girl named Neva Kerby. They were married in the Arizona LDS Temple on October 25, 1951. The young couple moved to Shafter, CA, where Dwayne taught middle school. In 1953, their first child, Cynthia, was born. For a few years, Dwayne went to work for Brown-Bevis in Bakersfield, CA, selling heavy construction equipment. A second daughter, Susan, was added to the family in 1955, followed by Karen in 1958. Moving to Ventura, CA, time was spent with family, earning a Master's degree in school administration, church leadership activities and a new job with Cal-Western Life Insurance. A son, Douglas Dwayne, was born in 1962. That same year, he began teaching again, working up to Jr. high counselor. Dwayne served as LDS bishop of Ventura 2nd & 3rd Wards until 1971, when the family returned to Mesa, AZ. Dwayne worked as asst. principal & principal at Fremont Jr. High, followed by Carson Jr. and Shepherd Jr. , all while earning his Doctorate in School Leadership. He was proud of his final Mesa Schools assignment-- planning principal of the new Brimhall Junior High School, named in honor of his father. Upon retiring in 1992, Dwayne & Neva served an LDS family history mission to Puerto Rico, and spent the years with church activities, hobbies, travel, and the growing tribe of grandkids. He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Neva Kerby, three daughters, Cynthia Henrie (Russ), Susan Dixon (Rich), Karen Brimhall, and son, Douglas Dwayne Brimhall (Lynn Sorenson); sisters Marilyn Hales (John), and Marita Edwards (Bernell), 9 Grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be 6-8pm Tuesday July 2 at Meldrum Mortuary, 52 North McDonald, Mesa, AZ 85201. Funeral Services will be held 10am Wednesday July 3, at the LDS Mesa Central Stake Center 925 North Harris, Mesa, AZ 85203, with a viewing 1 hour prior at the same address.
