81, of Scottsdale, Ariz. passed away on Jan. 11, 2014. Dr. Hubert A. Allen died quietly Saturday at his Scottsdale home after a courageous battle with leukemia. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Mary; his son, Hubert Jr. of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughter Lisa and son-in-law Tom Barnes of Anthem, Ariz.; adored grandchildren Nyika and Jos Allen of Albuquerque; Sam Allen of Highlands Ranch, Colo., and his mother, Janet Slate; Ally and Sydney Barnes of Anthem; brother Leroy Abraham of Memphis, Tenn.; Lee and Roger Strong of New York; Jane Holzkamp of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; and Deborah Helitzer of Albuquerque. He was predeceased by his son George, of Highlands Ranch. Dr. Allen was born June 2, 1932, in Memphis and graduated from The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Conn. He attended Yale University from 1950-52 and earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee in 1955. He served as an Air Force captain before settling in the Chicago area for his residency at Michael Reese Hospital. He also was a gastroenterology fellow at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Dr. Allen had an internal medicine and gastroenterology practice in Highland Park, Ill., for 34 years before retiring in 1997 and moving to Scottsdale. He was chairman of the Department of Medicine at Highland Park Hospital and chief of staff. Gentle and congenial in a medical setting or the golf fairways he trolled for a lifetime, Dr. Allen was loved, admired and appreciated by all who were fortunate enough to know him as a friend or patient. He was a beloved physician known for his calm and soothing manner, and was well known for his diagnostic ability. He will miss his friends from Highland Park and the Boulders in Scottsdale, but most of all his family, which was so loving and the most important thing in his life.
