Wally Hellman of Surprise, Arizona passed away on December 25, 2012 peacefully with his family by his side. Born on a cold, snowy day on January 14, 1923 in Brooklyn, New York, Wally was raised in Lawrence, Long Island, N.Y. Married September 7, 1946, he is survived by his wife, Charlotte R. Hellman. Wally will be remembered by their six children: Robi Hellman (daughter) of Pasadena, CA, Barnet R. Hellman (son) of Austin, TX, David B. Hellman (son) of Cottonwood, AZ, Lisa A. Soderquist (daughter) of Cupertino, CA, Leslie N. Hellman (son) of Surprise, AZ, Arthur L. Hellman (son) of Cedar Park, TX, 12 grand-children, three great grand-children, and three step-grand-children. At age 16, he attended the University of Michigan and earned a B.S. in Chemistry, Honors. He was a proud Michigan Blue. Wally garnered a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from New York University. He also served in WWII as a fighter pilot in the Army Air Corps. Wally was recognized as a distinguished Chemist and held various executive positions in the Chemical Research and Development profession for over thirty years. His career sent him to numerous countries including Canada, Denmark, England, Germany, Italy and the United States. With a passion for adventure, he and his wife, Charlotte, travelled the globe extensively. Wally had a witty sense of humor and was respectable bridge player, proficient bowler, and avid softball player in his day. Interment was held at the Veteran's National Cemetery at Cave Creek, AZ. Sinai Mortuary coordinated the details and Rabbi Sheldon Moss officiated the service on Wednesday, January 2.
