Kimball, James L.
James "Jim" L. Kimball, 80, passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at his residence in Nutrioso. He was born May 12, 1934 in Lansing, Michigan, the son of Leo Kimball and Charlotte Corr Kimball. He served his country in the United States Army and retired from the Forest Service in January 1993. Jim was the very proud supervisor of three National Forests in Arizona during his career; the Prescott National Forest was his first. From there he went to Springerville; the Apache and the Sitgreaves National Forests were combined under his watch. He became supervisor of the mighty Tonto National Forest in 1980 and served in that capacity until his retirement. Jim majored in Forestry at Michigan State University
and took four years of Army R.O.T.C. After graduation he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He served with the 82nd Airborne and headed a small Intelligence Unit. He married Gloria Shaver of Holt, Michigan and they raised four children. In 1986, he married Mary "Peggy" Rulison Phillips. After retirement, Jim and Peggy built a home in Nutrioso. Jim then served as president of the Hospital Board, the RV Chamber of Commerce, and the Historical Society. Jim is survived by his first wife, Gloria Kimball Phillips and his current wife, Mary M. "Peggy" Kimball, children, Timothy James, Tucson; Linda Lee Kimball, Apache Junction; Jamie Lynn (Herman) Chavez, Mesa; Kelly Jo Ely, Glendale; Kristin Elizabeth Phillips, Heather Lynn (Martin) Sexton; and Rainbow Fox Lackey; 12 grandchildren; step-grandchildren, Jordan (Jeff) Sexton Ziegler and Lieutenant J. G. Kieran Sexton; and 12 great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service to celebrate Jim's life will be held Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Burnham Mortuary, Eagar.
