John Callas, age 86, of Surprise, AZ, passed away on November 9, 2012, at Serenity Hospice. John was born in Milltown, NJ, on December 4, 1925, to parents of Greek descent. Drafted during World War II
, he served in the US Navy, mostly in Hawaii. After his discharge, John attended Rutgers University, where he received his degree in accounting. He worked in New Jersey as an accounting consultant. A few years later, he moved to California to enjoy the sunshine, surroundings, and proximity to his family for many years. When he moved to Arizona about nine years ago, he continued to participate in activities that gave him great pleasure: gardening, teaching Music Appreciation classes, telling stories of his childhood, and relaying facts and trivia. John was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Marie, Catherine, and Connie, and brother Michael. He is survived by his wife, Alice, daughter Erin, nieces Joanne and Chris, and nephews Paul and Michael, as well as grand nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at 10 am on November 16, at Camino del Sol Mortuary, 13738 W. Camino del Sol, Sun City West, AZ. The service,with Honor Guard in the chapel follows at 11 am, officiated by Father Michael from St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church. A reception at the Mortuary will follow the service. Interment will be at 2 pm at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix.
