12/18/28 - 7/11/13. John H Christman was born Dec 18, 1928 in Reading, PA, the son of Fred M and Marion (nee Huyett) Christman. After graduating from Shillington High School in 1946, he entered Muhlenberg College and graduated with a BA degree in 1950. While at Muhlenberg he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and was tapped for induction into Omicron Delta Kappa Society, in recognition of his leadership skills. John then attended the University of Pennsylvania Law School until he entered the US Army and served for three years during the Korean War as a special agent of the US Army Counter Intelligence Corps. While on active duty in Hawaii, he married Jane Stevens, daughter of the late Harold and Imelda Stevens, of Los Angeles CA. After his Army discharge in 1953, he was appointed a civilian special agent of the Office of Naval Intelligence (now NCIS), working both in Hawaii and Washington, DC. He was also appointed an Ensign in the Naval Reserve. He was an honor graduate of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Academy and served five years as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff; he also was granted retired credentials after over twenty years as a Special Deputy Sheriff with the Marin County (CA) Sheriff's Dept. Mr. Christman held various executive positions until accepting employment in 1971 as the Vice President and Director of Security for Macy's West, retiring in 1994 after 22 years at Macy's where he directed a staff of over 500 security personnel in some 60 stores and facilities in various states west of the Mississippi. While at Macy's he was elected to the National Retail Federation's Security Board of Directors for 12 years, and also served as President of Northern California Chief Special Agent's Association; he also taught security related courses at two San Francisco Bay Area colleges. In 1977 John was Board Certified as a Security Management Professional and in 2007 was inducted into NRF's Loss Prevention Ring of Excellence, honoring outstanding Loss Prevention leaders who shaped the industry. Throughout his career, John served on numerous boards and commissions, including the Marin County Crime Commission, the Harbor Area Retarded Children's Foundation, and the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce. After retiring from Macy's in 1994, he moved to Cardiff-by-the-Sea, San Diego County, and subsequently in 2008 to Gold Canyon, AZ. In 1994, he began his practice as a Certified Security Management Consultant specializing in expert witness assignments in the retail venue in both state and Federal courts, serving clients from coast to coast. Mr. Christman co-authored three security books; the latest published in 2008 was Retail Crime, Security and Loss Prevention-An Encyclopedic Reference, a 670+ page book peer reviewed as the most complete reference on Retail Security. John co-authored two earlier books in 2006 and 1992, both dealing with shoplifting. He has also contributed articles to numerous security related publications over the past 20 years and was a member of numerous professional security and law enforcement organizations. He was also active in the Gold Canyon Citizens on Patrol, a part of the Pinal County Sheriff's Office. John enjoyed both photography and firearms/shooting sports as hobbies as well as foreign travel with his wife Jane. John fully retired from consulting in 2013. He is survived by his wife Jane, of Gold Canyon, AZ; his son Robert (wife Judy) of Orangevale, CA; his son Mark (wife Jo-Anne) of Gold Canyon, AZ; daughter Lauri Saffon (husband E.T.) of Gold Canyon, AZ; and a sister Julia Zinsmeister, of Delray, FL.
