Claesgens, John R.
On February 28th, 2014, John R. Claesgens of Scottsdale, passed away at the age of 92 following a brief illness. John grew up in Owatonna, Minnesota, the son of Anthony and Margaret Claesgens. He attended the College of St. Thomas in St. Paul before enlisting in the US Navy to become a pilot. In June of 1944, John and Dorthea Popelka were married and together they raised 5 children. John was a career pilot for the Olin Corporation and upon his retirement in 1981, they moved to Scottsdale. John and Dorthea were members of St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church. John leaves three sons, Michael (Jane) Claesgens of Park Ridge, New Jersey; Thomas (Dona) Claesgens of Fort Lee, New Jersey; Robert Claesgens of Phoenix, Arizona; and one daughter, Susan Lewis of Bethlehem, Connecticut. Survivors include his granddaughter Christine (Daniel) DeTitta, grandsons Kevin Claesgens and Charles Watt and great grandson Jameson DeTitta. He leaves a sister Dorthy Anne Claesgens of Owatonna. He was predeceased by Dorthea, his wife of 62 years and his eldest son Charles. His children wish to thank the staff and his many friends at VI Grayhawk for helping our Dad leave this earth with grace and dignity. A memorial service will be held at Messinger Indian School Mortuary, 7601 E. Indian School Rd, Scottsdale, AZ, on March 14th, 2014 at 2:00 pm. A private family burial will be held.
